Indian batter KL Rahul hailed the quality of the Galle surface following a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in their first Test match. This thrilling encounter, held over five days, allowed both batters and bowlers to excel, as Rahul described it as a “great Test match.”
The victory placed India ahead 1-0 in the two-match series. Manav Suthar emerged as the star of the match, delivering a stunning 10-wicket haul in only his second Test. Prior to Suthar’s achievement, Devdutt Padikkal scored a remarkable 167 runs, earning him the Player of the Match title.
Post-match, Rahul emphasized Galle’s pitch for facilitating a competitive game. He remarked that the pitch equally favored spinners while still allowing disciplined batters to accumulate runs. He cited Sonal Dinusha of Sri Lanka as an exemplary player who executed an effective game plan, scoring 100 in the first innings and 84 in the second despite the defeat.
Rahul stated, “I think it was a great Test match. The wicket played really well throughout the five days. There was something for spinners, but the batters who applied themselves could score runs as well. We saw Sonal from Sri Lanka bat beautifully, showing a clear approach to facing the spinners.”
He acknowledged the pivotal roles of both pace and spin bowlers in making the match a memorable spectacle.
India celebrated their victory right before rain interrupted play in Galle. Rahul expressed relief at clinching the match knowing the rain was imminent. He noted the importance of breaking vital partnerships, referencing the crucial collaboration between Keshara Nuwantha and Dinusha.
“Just relieved, honestly! We kept an eye on the clouds and knew a big shower could arrive. We aimed to take wickets quickly. Once we broke that partnership, it gave us the confidence to dismiss their lower order,” he commented.
India’s first Test victory came after bowling out Sri Lanka for 206 while defending a target of 372 runs. Suthar’s targeting prowess shone through with figures of 6/55 in the second innings, marking a historical achievement of 10 wickets in just his second Test match.
On Day 5, Sri Lanka resumed at 84/4. Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva fought valiantly, building a 95-run partnership before Jadeja’s dismissal of Dhananjaya for 59. Despite Dinusha’s efforts, scoring 84, Suthar’s brilliance turned the tide, claiming three wickets in one over followed by dismissing Nuwantha shortly after, sealing the win for India.
In their first innings, India scored a formidable 464 runs led by Padikkal, while Sri Lanka responded with 284 runs, aided by Dinusha’s century. In their second innings, India managed 193 runs, setting the hosts a challenging target of 372.
