GOPESHWAR/DEHRADUN: The tragic tunnel accident in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, has now claimed nine lives, with the recovery of another worker’s body on Tuesday. This incident unfolded on August 13 when a landslide engulfed a tunnel, leaving two workers initially reported missing.
Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer NK Joshi confirmed the recovery of the body during ongoing search operations. The deceased has been sent to Gopeshwar District Hospital for identification as rescue operations continue to locate the last missing worker.
The landslide incident resulted from heavy rainfall, quickly filling the tunnel with debris and water, harming not only the workers inside but also complicating the rescue mission. In addition to the fatalities, twelve others suffered injuries during the disaster.
Officials have stated that rescue and relief operations are conducted on a war footing to locate the remaining missing worker. A joint task force comprising the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), along with local police, is tirelessly working to ensure a successful recovery.
Search operations face several challenges, including difficult conditions caused by significant sludge inside the tunnel. Despite these hindrances, all teams coordinate efforts to carry out their mission effectively. The sludge complicates access, requiring rapid response measures to facilitate the search.
To assist in this challenging mission, officials report that debris and sludge are being actively removed, with water being pumped out using suction pumps and other available equipment. These measures aim to improve visibility and access to the last known location of the missing worker.
Furthermore, Chamoli District Information Officer Dheeraj Karki reported that recovery efforts have yielded some positive results. Three out of five JCB machines trapped in the three-kilometre-long tunnel have been retrieved, providing hope for accelerating the search for the remaining workers, while efforts continue to extract the two machines still encapsulated in debris.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by landslides in hilly regions of Uttarakhand, particularly during monsoon seasons. As weather conditions remain unpredictable, continuous support and resources are essential to ensure the safety of rescuers and the swift identification of the deceased.
